Job Description
To lead and direct the strategic delivery of key Retail and Business Banking (RBB) activities across the Country. This will include, but not limited to, planning and coordinating with product heads in Country and at Regional Level (Head Office) to optimise the relevance of RBB product and services across Retail, Business Banking, Products and Channels to ensure a fully integrated strategy and seamless delivery of RBB solutions.
To formulate, drive and deliver on business strategic objectives for RBB, with specific focus on a deep understanding of the local markets and customers while leveraging the available expertise and economies of scale of the regional office. Ensure the infrastructure required to deliver the business plan is in place and the service levels agreed with the various infrastructure heads.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide Strategic Leadership (20%)
Stay abreast of industry trends, role players and in country opportunities and challenges to ensure that the business is well positioned to provide competitive and industry leading product and services.
Identify and engage strategic role players, stakeholders, and industry forums to understand and shape potential changes to strategy, regulations, and markets.
Communicate the Group’s long-term strategy that clearly articulates strategic targets and metrics to align the delivery against the Bank’s strategic objectives and targets and shareholder expectations.
Continually review and refine the optimal business model and deliver on required changes to ensure the business maintain competitive advantage, meet client expectations, reduce cost and improve profitability
Drive the development and tracking of tactical plans and scorecards and take corrective actions where required.
Drive sustainable cost and processing efficiencies within RBB through continuous innovation, industry benchmarking and alignment to best practices leveraging the global, regional, and local matrix
Scan the external market to understand future challenges and ensure that RBB is well positioned to anticipate market changes
Lead, contribute and play a proactive role on various committees
Co-ordinate all initiatives, tactical plans and strategic priorities with Managing Executive: RBB Africa, to ensure alignment with overall RBB Africa agenda.
Drive Business Performance (30%)
For areas managed by this role, implement performance controls to proactively measure achievement against strategic targets and address changes or non-performance.
Provide ongoing advice and direction to the operational environments managed by this role in terms of the areas of focus, opportunities, key targets and relative policies, legislative and regulatory environments.
Work with the Finance team in the area of responsibility on improving the models for transfer pricing or cost allocation between relevant business units.
Implement governance structures and stakeholder frameworks to ensure effective customer management and engagement.
Build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships within the industry and within the Bank to ensure the unit is successfully positioned to manage risks and expectations and deliver on shareholder value.
Participate and contribute to industry and Bank wide forums and governance structures as required or directed.
Manage the financial sustainability and effective use of resources within (20%)
Drive the annual planning and review of MTP, STP and Revised Annual Forecast (RAF) budgets for the function including the setting of MTP and STP Financial targets and standards and related measures and anticipated financial cost targets.
Ensure rigorous cost management within Business by implementing a highly structured budget, monitoring and reporting process and instilling discipline within the team around cost control. Ensure the function/unit has sufficient resources to deliver on operational and customer commitments.
Monitor annual resource utilisation and implement strategies to improve the efficient allocation and utilization of resources within the business.
Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in terms of the annual calendar.
Implement effective corrective measures to ensure financial control and address negative budgetary variances.
Based on proposals brought by leaders in the unit, review opportunities for investment or disinvestment of resources and make capital allocation decisions within mandate.
Drive the effective identification, funding and resourcing of new change initiatives within the area of responsibility.
Review workforce and recruitment plans for the area and reallocate resources where required.
Maintain a healthy risk profile (10%)
Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework and internal Policies and Policy Standards.
Understand and manage risks and risk events (incidents) relevant to the role.
Identify and take accountability for the assigned principal risks relevant to the area in terms of the Operational Risk Management framework and ensure that adequate controls are in place within the role’s area of responsibility.
Monitor all business risk activities (including business assurance and operational risk management) within the remit of this operating environment through obtaining feedback and providing guidance for tactical plans to ensure compliance to Group standards.
Drive a culture of proactive compliance and risk management within the executive team and the RBB unit as a whole.
Review the risk management and compliance practices of this function as a whole and highlight areas that require improvement to leaders in the team.
People Management (20%)
Embed the Absa values and behaviors that reinforce the acheivement Bank’s strategy.
Drive colleague experience within the business unit putting in place and executing on plans to enhance engagement.
Maintain a succession plan for the critical roles in the business unit in line with the Absa talent management process.
Determine the learning needs and future skills of the function working in collaboration with the Leadership, Learning and Talent Head and RBB leadership team; allocate appropriate budget and monitor execution of agreed development initiatives.
Pursue own development to increase personal effectiveness whilst acknowledging strengths and areas of development.
Qualifications and Experience
Honors BSc degree in Finance / Business Sciences or a related bachelor's degree
A post graduate qualification or a master's degree is an added advantage.
Preferred Experience
10 years’ experience in the Financial Services sector which must include proven experience.
5 years’ experience on a senior management level in the financial services sector
5 years’ experience as a Retail and Business Banking leader.
Experience in managing diverse teams.
