Job Description
Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and support in performing their duties, and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment within the accounting team.
Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and other reports, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards (GAAP/IFRS).
Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis, variance analysis, and performance evaluation to assess the organization's financial health, identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities, and provide insights to support decision-making by management.
Budgeting and Forecasting: Assist in the development, monitoring, and analysis of budgets and forecasts, collaborating with department managers to set financial targets, track expenses, and identify areas for cost savings or revenue enhancement.
General Ledger Management: Maintain the general ledger, including posting journal entries, reconciling accounts, analyzing account balances, and ensuring accuracy and integrity of financial data in accordance with accounting principles.
Internal Controls: Establish and maintain effective internal control procedures and processes to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) and other applicable regulations.
Audit Support: Coordinate and assist with internal and external audits, providing documentation, explanations, and support to auditors, addressing audit findings, and implementing recommendations for improvement as needed.
Tax Compliance: Ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations, including preparation and filing of tax returns (e.g., income tax, sales tax, payroll tax), responding to tax inquiries, and advising on tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities.
Financial Systems and Processes: Evaluate, recommend, and implement improvements to financial systems, processes, and procedures to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of financial operations and reporting.
Team Leadership and Training: Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and support in performing their duties, and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment within the accounting team.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is typically required for Senior Accountant positions. Some employers may prefer candidates with a master's degree or professional certification, such as CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant).
Experience: Several years of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles, with increasing levels of responsibility and complexity, are typically required for Senior Accountant positions. Experience in financial analysis, reporting, and auditing is often preferred.
Accounting Knowledge: Strong knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and standards, including GAAP/IFRS, as well as familiarity with regulatory requirements and compliance issues relevant to the organization's industry and jurisdiction.
Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical skills are essential for Senior Accountants to analyze financial data, identify trends, assess risks, and provide meaningful insights to support decision-making by management and stakeholders.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks), as well as advanced proficiency in spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel) for financial modeling, analysis, and reporting.
Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary for Senior Accountants to effectively communicate financial information, analysis, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders, including senior management and auditors.
Attention to Detail: Attention to detail is critical for Senior Accountants to ensure accuracy and precision in financial reporting, analysis, and compliance activities, as well as to identify errors, discrepancies, and areas for improvement.
Time Management: Effective time management and organizational skills are important for Senior Accountants to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and balance competing demands in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
Problem-Solving Skills: Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills are necessary for Senior Accountants to identify issues, evaluate alternative solutions, and implement effective strategies to address financial challenges and achieve organizational goals.
