Job Description
In summary, a senior accountant in a hydro power company plays a crucial role in managing the financial health of the organization, ensuring compliance with regulations, optimizing financial processes, and providing strategic insights to support decision-making and sustainable growth.
Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
Prepare and consolidate financial statements in accordance with relevant accounting standards (e.g., IFRS).
Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner to management.
Monitor financial performance and provide insightful analysis to support decision making.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
Coordinate the budgeting process and assist in the development of annual financial plans.
Prepare forecasts and projections based on historical data and market trends.
Monitor variances between actual and budgeted financial results and provide explanations.
Audit and Compliance:
Coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Implement and maintain accounting controls to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
Address audit findings and implement recommendations for improvements.
Taxation and Regulatory Reporting:
Prepare and file tax returns (income tax, VAT, etc.) and ensure compliance with tax regulations.
Stay updated on changes in tax laws and regulations affecting the hydro power industry.
Prepare regulatory reports and filings as required by governmental agencies or industry bodies.
Cash Flow Management:
Manage cash flow and forecasting, ensuring availability of funds for operations.
Monitor banking activities and reconcile bank statements.
Optimize cash management procedures to improve efficiency and minimize financial risk.
Cost Management and Analysis:
Analyze costs, pricing, variable contributions, sales results, and the company’s actual performance compared to the business plans.
Support management in understanding cost drivers and identifying opportunities
Financial Systems and Processes:
Evaluate and recommend improvements to financial systems and processes.
Implement and maintain accounting software systems and ensure data integrity.
Train and mentor junior accounting staff and oversee their work.
Financial Planning and Strategy:
Assist in the development and implementation of financial strategies aligned with business objectives.
Provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making processes.
Participate in financial risk management activities and recommend risk mitigation strategies.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement:
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including investors, auditors, regulatory authorities, and financial institutions.
Communicate financial performance and forecasts effectively to senior management and other stakeholders.
Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to support financial goals and objectives.
Ad-hoc Projects and Analysis:
Undertake special projects and ad-hoc financial analysis as required.
Provide financial support for contract negotiations, acquisitions, or other strategic initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is generally required.
Candidates with a professional certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA, CIMA) are preferred. MBA is an added advantage
Professional Certifications:
Certification as a Chartered Accountant (CA) or equivalent is preferred.
Specific certifications relevant to the energy sector (e.g., in energy management or renewables) can be advantageous.
Experience
Work Experience
5-10 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management roles.
Experience specifically in the energy sector, preferably in hydro power or renewable energy, is highly desirable.
Previous experience in senior accounting roles with responsibilities for financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance is important.
Industry Knowledge
Understanding of hydro power operations, financial challenges, and regulatory requirements.
Knowledge of energy market dynamics, cost structures, and revenue recognition principles in the energy sector.

Strong knowledge of accounting principles (IFRS, GAAP) and financial standards applicable to the energy sector.
